MACEDONIA
Plan (created in 2012) launched in 2013 for 2013-2015
Objectives/Aims:
• Strengthen the gender perspective in the formulation and implementation of the Peace, Security and Defence Policy of the Republic of Macedonia
• Strengthen the participation and contribution of women to international, civilian and military missions in which the Republic of Macedonia takes part
• Prevent violence and protect women's rights in the time of peace, conflict and humanitarian disasters.
Commentary:
Macedonia has not been involved in conflict recently. The country gives priority to being a regional power in cooperation with the European Union (EU) and North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in South-eastern Europe. Hence the focus of the Macedonian NAP is predominantly regional implementation of UNSCR 1325. The first NAP was adopted in 2012 for the period of 2013-2015 and no new NAP has been launched.
Civil Society:
Macedonian NAP implicitly refers to an offer of collaboration with the representatives of civil society. The document does not give further details on the involvement of civil society actors in the development, implementation and monitoring processes of the NAP.
Women in Peacekeeping:
Macedonia has set a goal of engaging peacekeeping operations and humanitarian missions, pursuant to UNSCR 1325. Incorporation of the gender perspective in the peacekeeping operations and missions and delivery of a gender-sensitive training for personnel were included the country`s national action plan. However, Macedonia has provided only a few peacekeepers who have been exclusively male to UN peace operations (UNMIL in Liberia).
