Senate approves first woman to lead US Navy

Admiral Lisa Franchetti has been approved by the US Senate to lead the US Navy.  She is the first woman to head a Pentagon military service branch and will join the Joint Chiefs of Staff which comprise the United States' most senior military officers.

Franchetti formerly headed the US 6th fleet and US naval forces in South Korea.  She has also served as an aircraft carrier strike commander.  When nominating her earlier this year, President Biden hailed Franchetti’s “extensive expertise in both the operational and policy arenas.”
