At its Washington summit on July 2024, NATO allies endorsed an updated Policy on Women, Peace, and Security intended to implement the UN Security Council Resolution 1325. Having first adopted its policy on WPS in 2007, the new document provides a political framework for the Alliance to further promote the WPS agenda across all three of its core tasks, as stated in its 2022 Strategic Concept.

The new policy features four strategic objectives - namely, strengthening gender-responsive leadership and accountability, increasing women’s participation at all levels, preventing threats that disproportionately impact women, and protecting women and girls from gender-based violence.

Irene Fellin, NATO’s Secretary General’s Special Representative for WPS, stated “As we mark NATO’s 75th anniversary and approach the 25 years of the UNSCR 1325, this new Women, Peace and Security Policy represents our renewed commitment to uphold the values that enhance the unity and resilience of our Alliance”.
