Denmark to Speed Up Introduction of Gender-Neutral Conscription

Amid growing security threats, Denmark has decided to accelerate the introduction of gender-neutral conscription by two years, making it the third NATO country - after Norway and Sweden - to draft both men and women into military service. While the need for more personnel is a major reason behind the decision, Danish politicians have also framed this move in terms of gender equality.

Under the new system, Danish women who turn 18 after July 1, 2025, will be required to register for health screening and potential conscription. If voluntary enlistment falls short, women, like men, will be subject to a lottery-based selection process to fill the necessary ranks.

This shift marks a historic change in Denmark’s military recruitment, as it brings legal equality in conscription for the first time. Before the introduction of this requirement, women could join the armed forces on a voluntary basis, having already formed a considerable part of Danish conscripts.
